Hip Hop - The Fifth Element

Basic Building Blocks

According to the pioneers of Hip Hop, there are four main elements or “pillars” that define hip hop culture, and more recently a new element has been introduced.
MCing/Rapping, DJing/Scratching, Break dancing, and Graffiti Writing are the main pillars, and some even consider other elements such as sampling and beatboxing. But hip hop artists are now considering Knowledge to be the fifth element. This can be seen as a way of preserving hip-hop culture from being the misogynistic, materially-focused ego trip that mainstream media has made it out to be, because now more and more artists are focusing on the truth of things that matter.  When you look at these pillars on a more symbolic level, we can see that they are building blocks for a certain lifestyle and way of being.

Hip Hop & Life

An example of the practical applications of these pillars can look at MCing as the act of honestly vocalizing your thoughts and opinions. Speaking your mind for yourself and nobody else; being original.

The element of DJing can be interpreted as the act of creating music. Be it playing Guitar, Bass, Piano, Drums, Scratching, Beat Boxing, Pencil Tapping… this pillar, for me, represents creating music. Music is an expression of self, and when created from a pure place, free of alternative motives, it has the power to heal yourself and others. So creating music in itself can be taken in many ways - everything is music. Poetry, Art, Nature, it’s all music and that’s why we love it, and we can make music in many ways, even through living our lives harmoniously.

Graffiti Writing is something people can feel with their eyes - it’s primarily a visual experience that can trigger emotions. Whereas making music is a very feeling-based, internal process, Graffiti art is more about putting it out there for people to see.

Breakdancing is one pillar that many people struggle with because it requires you to be very present in your body and to lose the fear of being silly. This element can be summed up to represent physical energy. Exercise, dance, running, biking, gymnastics, breakdancing is all about movement and using your body in creative ways. This really anchors more of your awareness in your body and can even be a very meditative practice for some.

Last but not least we have knowledge. This one does not need to be simplified. If we’re not learning, what are we doing? Gaining skills and abilities is the key to empowering ourselves. No one becomes great by sitting on their ass. Successful people are known for developing an ability. Attaining knowledge. Knowledge doesn’t always have to come from a book. Life is teaching us lessons everyday through our very own lives, and growing through those means we gain personal experience. But we can also learn from other people’s experiences by connecting and sharing, or reading books about the things people have learned and passed on. We can learn through art and we can learn by creating, the important thing is that we nourish our soul through personal growth.

Once these five pillars become the foundation for your life, one can realize how and why hip-hop is much more than a style of music - it’s a way of life.

History of Spoken Word

Spoken word is a performance-based poetry that is focused on the aesthetics of word-play and storytelling and has its roots as far back as the ancient Greeks. Many spoken word poets call it a fusion between writing and acting and it can often be accompanied by other art forms like music, theatre, and dance.

Spoken word focuses on the performance of the words themselves, the dynamics, tone, gestures, facial expressions, and more. Poetic components such as rhyme, repetition, slang, improvisation, and many more elements of poetry can be woven to create an atmosphere the audience can experience.

Modern North-American spoken word poetry originated from the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance and blues music as well as the beatniks. The term “spoken word” was first adopted to explain the new art coming out of the post-modern art movement and made popular in the underground black community in the 1960s with political music group, The Last Poets.

Spoken Word’s fuel is truth and it is one way that many people with strong opinions express them in a creative way. It is an outlet for people to release their views outside the academic and institutional domains of the academic or media. The spoken word and its most popular offshoot, slam poetry, evolved into the present-day soap-box for people, especially younger ones, to express their views, emotions, life experiences or information to audiences. The views of spoken-word artists encompass frank commentary on religion, politics, sex and gender, often taboo subjects in society.

5 Back to School Tips

It’s that time again - the most wonderful time of the year!
And in honor of this most exalted of celebrations, we at Candy Funhouse would like to help you make this transition Back to School one that will hopefully soften the sobering blow of academia. Here are 5 great tips you can apply to the daily routine to make it not so daily.

5) Talk about it — sometimes just laying your cards out on the table is the best way to get through hard times. If you’re a child or a parent, take initiative in having that conversation where you talk about the things preventing this experience from being a pleasant one, and then talk it out until you reach solutions that can be easily integrated.

4) Make a Plan — Transition requires a great deal of planning, organizing and communication but it’s all worth it if you’re able to get through life’s surprises and changes with greater ease. There are days where even the best set plans don’t work the way we hoped, but all you can do is try different tools until something clicks. Remember: When cooking, it’s most efficient to have all the ingredients you’re using prepped and the same applies for back to school. The more prepared you are, the easier it will be.

3) Stop Rushing — in the ever-changing race to the top, why are we in such a hurry? You can’t hurry a garden, or a child for that matter, so remember where you are instead of stressing about not being where you want to be.

2) Mistakes Are Ok — ”Out of fear, we fix things that aren’t broken, make decisions for our children that are theirs to make, and try to make things easier when challenge is what is called for.”  Mistakes must be welcome in school as well as at home, trying to raise them perfectly is a big flaw for a learning community. If instead mistakes are forgiven and welcome, it is more likely to be learn from them.

1) Try Something New — find creative solutions to problems. If focus on homework is an issue, walk on a treadmill while reading or take frequent breaks at 15 minute intervals. When in class, conceive many unique interpretations of movies, books, political discussions, unsettling school or peer issues, or works of art. Instead of taking the same thing to school for lunch every day, try looking up new, clever and fresh lunch ideas. Keep it FRESH!

As daunting as Back to School may seem, if you take control of the situation and make it a more enjoyable experience for yourself by coming up with innovative ways of making the mundane less mind-numbing, then who knows, you might even enjoy your back to school experience… but let’s not get carried away now.  ;)

When Life Gives You Lemons, Run a Lemonade Stand

Kylie’s Story

Kylie – 4 is an Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) survivor. She was diagnosed with ALL in April of 2012 and it has been a long, hard journey filled with many emotions and testing times since then. Even to this day her parents are still faced with new challenges, as Kylie’s mother shares:

“Chris and I face the new challenge of not allowing the anxiety and fear of a relapse to consume us. We want to cherish the good times we are blessed with and enjoy Cameron and Kylie.”

Kylie began a 30 month treatment process when she was diagnosed, which would include intensive chemotherapy, 10 different drugs of varying dosages and intervals, spending lots of time in and out of hospitals – even her own 3rd birthday, as well as the emotional roller-coaster that her and her family would face. But luckily it would be that Kylie was surrounded by so much love and support that it would bring people together in such a way where even strangers, communities, even the nurses became as close as some of the families that surrounded her. It seems that the support that Kylie and her family received was integral to their healing process.

What’s Next?

Now that the treatment is over, the question arises as to what happens next. Although Kylie’s chemo has concluded, the journey continues as she will require close monitoring to ensure there is no cause for concern of the cancer returning.

But on a more positive note, Kylie shows no signs of fear and is ready to get on with living her life to the fullest. For example next Wednesday, August 13, 2014, Kylie will be running her own lemonade stand outside of Candy Funhouse! It has always been a desire close to this brave girl’s heart to run her own lemonade stand and donate the money to charity, and we at Candy Funhouse would love nothing more than to support this inspiring child’s dream. One thing is for sure; if there’s anything I’ve learned from Kylie’s story is that if life gives you lemons, put on a lemonade stand.

What the Fudge?!

Freshly smuggled from the States, this notorious brand of fudge is known for being the best Fudge in the World! That’s a pretty big claim, but one taste of this succulent delicacy will convince you why. I’m talking of course about the Chocolate Moonshine Company.

Like all good Moonshine, the recipe is a family secret and is what separates their fudge from all the rest. Made with pure chocolate liquor, fresh cream, organic cane sugar, and natural ingredients, these are then hand stirred in copper kettles to produce soft, melt in your mouth, gourmet fudge. They claim that their secret lies in the process of how it’s made. Being cooked in a micro-bath method allows multiple natural flavour notes, with each ingredient being treated differently. They then add an extra boost that guarantees you get more nutrients and robust flavour than any other fudge. Regardless of how it’s made, whatever they’re doing it seems to be working.

The Chocolate Moonshine Co.’s fudge contains 0 trans-fats, Imported Belgian Chocolate, is and has been Handmade since 1989, has no egg or wheat, is Gluten Free, has 50% Less sugar than traditional fudge, and is family owned. Dare I say this fudge might even be… healthy? Easily the healthiest fudge, these characteristics definitely add to the value of this product, because not only is it dangerously delicious, but the attention to quality and detail that comes from being made by people and not machines makes it incomparable to most commercial confectionery out there.
The fudge is sold as slices of blocks/loaves and also come in beautifully crafted bars. Their Artisan Fudge Bars are hand painted with French Cocoa Butter and come in 33 flavours.

Candy Funhouse is pleased to announce that we are now carrying Chocolate Moonshine Company products! So come on down for a visit and try some of the world’s greatest fudge!

The following is my favourite quote for one simple reason - It’s Harry Potter!

1. A bag of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans.
"You want to be careful with those," Ron  warned Harry. “When they say every flavor, they mean every flavor - you know, you get all the ordinary ones like chocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liver and tripe. George reckons he had a booger-flavored one once.”
Ron picked up a green bean, looked at it carefully, and bit into a corner.
"Bleaaargh - see? Sprouts."
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

We just so happen to carry these very Beans!
