5 Back to School Tips

It’s that time again - the most wonderful time of the year!
And in honor of this most exalted of celebrations, we at Candy Funhouse would like to help you make this transition Back to School one that will hopefully soften the sobering blow of academia. Here are 5 great tips you can apply to the daily routine to make it not so daily.

5) Talk about it — sometimes just laying your cards out on the table is the best way to get through hard times. If you’re a child or a parent, take initiative in having that conversation where you talk about the things preventing this experience from being a pleasant one, and then talk it out until you reach solutions that can be easily integrated.

4) Make a Plan — Transition requires a great deal of planning, organizing and communication but it’s all worth it if you’re able to get through life’s surprises and changes with greater ease. There are days where even the best set plans don’t work the way we hoped, but all you can do is try different tools until something clicks. Remember: When cooking, it’s most efficient to have all the ingredients you’re using prepped and the same applies for back to school. The more prepared you are, the easier it will be.

3) Stop Rushing — in the ever-changing race to the top, why are we in such a hurry? You can’t hurry a garden, or a child for that matter, so remember where you are instead of stressing about not being where you want to be.

2) Mistakes Are Ok — ”Out of fear, we fix things that aren’t broken, make decisions for our children that are theirs to make, and try to make things easier when challenge is what is called for.”  Mistakes must be welcome in school as well as at home, trying to raise them perfectly is a big flaw for a learning community. If instead mistakes are forgiven and welcome, it is more likely to be learn from them.

1) Try Something New — find creative solutions to problems. If focus on homework is an issue, walk on a treadmill while reading or take frequent breaks at 15 minute intervals. When in class, conceive many unique interpretations of movies, books, political discussions, unsettling school or peer issues, or works of art. Instead of taking the same thing to school for lunch every day, try looking up new, clever and fresh lunch ideas. Keep it FRESH!

As daunting as Back to School may seem, if you take control of the situation and make it a more enjoyable experience for yourself by coming up with innovative ways of making the mundane less mind-numbing, then who knows, you might even enjoy your back to school experience… but let’s not get carried away now.  ;)

When Life Gives You Lemons, Run a Lemonade Stand

Kylie’s Story

Kylie – 4 is an Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) survivor. She was diagnosed with ALL in April of 2012 and it has been a long, hard journey filled with many emotions and testing times since then. Even to this day her parents are still faced with new challenges, as Kylie’s mother shares:

“Chris and I face the new challenge of not allowing the anxiety and fear of a relapse to consume us. We want to cherish the good times we are blessed with and enjoy Cameron and Kylie.”

Kylie began a 30 month treatment process when she was diagnosed, which would include intensive chemotherapy, 10 different drugs of varying dosages and intervals, spending lots of time in and out of hospitals – even her own 3rd birthday, as well as the emotional roller-coaster that her and her family would face. But luckily it would be that Kylie was surrounded by so much love and support that it would bring people together in such a way where even strangers, communities, even the nurses became as close as some of the families that surrounded her. It seems that the support that Kylie and her family received was integral to their healing process.

What’s Next?

Now that the treatment is over, the question arises as to what happens next. Although Kylie’s chemo has concluded, the journey continues as she will require close monitoring to ensure there is no cause for concern of the cancer returning.

But on a more positive note, Kylie shows no signs of fear and is ready to get on with living her life to the fullest. For example next Wednesday, August 13, 2014, Kylie will be running her own lemonade stand outside of Candy Funhouse! It has always been a desire close to this brave girl’s heart to run her own lemonade stand and donate the money to charity, and we at Candy Funhouse would love nothing more than to support this inspiring child’s dream. One thing is for sure; if there’s anything I’ve learned from Kylie’s story is that if life gives you lemons, put on a lemonade stand.

What the Fudge?!

Freshly smuggled from the States, this notorious brand of fudge is known for being the best Fudge in the World! That’s a pretty big claim, but one taste of this succulent delicacy will convince you why. I’m talking of course about the Chocolate Moonshine Company.

Like all good Moonshine, the recipe is a family secret and is what separates their fudge from all the rest. Made with pure chocolate liquor, fresh cream, organic cane sugar, and natural ingredients, these are then hand stirred in copper kettles to produce soft, melt in your mouth, gourmet fudge. They claim that their secret lies in the process of how it’s made. Being cooked in a micro-bath method allows multiple natural flavour notes, with each ingredient being treated differently. They then add an extra boost that guarantees you get more nutrients and robust flavour than any other fudge. Regardless of how it’s made, whatever they’re doing it seems to be working.

The Chocolate Moonshine Co.’s fudge contains 0 trans-fats, Imported Belgian Chocolate, is and has been Handmade since 1989, has no egg or wheat, is Gluten Free, has 50% Less sugar than traditional fudge, and is family owned. Dare I say this fudge might even be… healthy? Easily the healthiest fudge, these characteristics definitely add to the value of this product, because not only is it dangerously delicious, but the attention to quality and detail that comes from being made by people and not machines makes it incomparable to most commercial confectionery out there.
The fudge is sold as slices of blocks/loaves and also come in beautifully crafted bars. Their Artisan Fudge Bars are hand painted with French Cocoa Butter and come in 33 flavours.

Candy Funhouse is pleased to announce that we are now carrying Chocolate Moonshine Company products! So come on down for a visit and try some of the world’s greatest fudge!

The following is my favourite quote for one simple reason - It’s Harry Potter!

1. A bag of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans.
"You want to be careful with those," Ron  warned Harry. “When they say every flavor, they mean every flavor - you know, you get all the ordinary ones like chocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liver and tripe. George reckons he had a booger-flavored one once.”
Ron picked up a green bean, looked at it carefully, and bit into a corner.
"Bleaaargh - see? Sprouts."
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

We just so happen to carry these very Beans!

Birthday Gift Dilemma - SOLVED.

Ever feel at a loss for what to get that special friend or loved one for their birthday or special occasion?
Yeah - me too… this dilemma is a common trend among gifters all over the world. But have no fear, the Candy Funhouse
Fun-gineers are here and have discovered a solution…

Gifts aren’t always an easy thing to get as everyone has their own preferences. A gift can also say a lot about how you feel about someone, and sometimes we can unwillingly give off the wrong message by giving the wrong gift. I mean let’s be honest, socks, underwear and gift cards don’t really quite say “I love you” like something that was hand picked according to your likes and desires.

So how does one escape this danger zone of a potential drop in ranking on your friend’s priority list?
Two words: Gift Basket.
Think about it, why just get them one thing when you can tell them you love them with a smörgåsbord of candies, treats,
chocolates, gifts and novelties in one convenient, affordable package? Birthday Gift Dilemma: Solved.

At Candy Funhouse we have a wide selection of in-house, pre-made arrangements in all sizes like Wonka and Retro
themed baskets. Don’t see what you want? We can custom make a basket to your preference using whatever theme or
products you like. Come on down and check it out or visit our online store!

Science Says Happy People Eat Candy, Hopefuls Eat Fruit

Did you know that being happy about your past might be the reason you reach for jelly beans instead of green beans? According to Karen Page Winterich of Pennsylvania State University and Kelly Haws of Texas A&M, studies have revealed that happy people tend to reach for candies more often than hopeful people who pick fruit.
These findings show that people that are nostalgic and focused on the good things of the past tend to crave candy more than those people focused on the future.
In the first of four studies done participants were asked to think about the past, present or future and then seeing whether they picked candy or fruit. The result was  that participants “in the future” would eat less M&M’s than those thinking of present/past happiness and would be more likely to choose the healthier option.
This unconventional experiment has concluded that the next time your candy cravings are out of control, try switching your stream of thoughts from the positive past to the hopeful glow of the future.

On the other side of this coin there’s a long history of people using chocolate to make themselves happier, but the question still remains: is there a scientific basis behind it, or is the mood boosting ability of chocolate just an old wives’ tale?

The richness and sweetness tasted in chocolate accounts for the satisfaction we feel when eating it. These qualities stimulate the part of the brain responsible for pleasing sensations (called the hypothalamus). When you eat chocolate, even dark chocolate, because it has a high percentage of fat and sugar, improves your mood due to the pleasure sensors in your brain being activated.
In addition, chocolate can affect the amount of serotonin in the brain. This chemical is known for having an effect on mood, and is regulated by many anti-depressants. While the effect of chocolate is far less than that of medical remedies for depression, it does have a noticeable effect on the way serotonin is released.

Chemically, chocolate doesn’t have the ability to boost mood for extended periods of time. To get a noticeable effect from these compounds you’d have to eat a lot of chocolate. But although the fat and sugar content isn’t ready to be used to fight depression, a little bit might just help you cure the blues.
But science aside - I think most would say they are pretty happy while eating chocolate and after for a bit. Some things in life you don’t need a scientific test for. Eating chocolate is one of those times, so if it tastes good and makes you feel good then by all means enjoy your chocolate!

Next Level Marshmallows

How’s this for genius - stuffing an already delicious, spongy marshmallow with your favourite fillings like chocolate, grape, cherry or strawberry jelly.

Today, my candy conquest has led me to a wonderful new discovery - GÜD FÜD’s stuffed marshmallows. All the great-tasting, fat free goodness that marshmallows offer plus, in my case, a chocolaty ganache centre that bursts the moment you sink your teeth into it. The glutton in me wished there were more filling (and more samples ;), but this spin on a classic candy is a delight that’s easy to eat and tastes decadent - Das is gud fud!
Each stuffed marshmallow comes individually wrapped and in a variety of packs or as singles.

Keep any eye out for GÜD FÜD Marshmallows Coming Soon to Candyfunhouse!

Cherry Blossom, a Canadian treat enjoyed for over 100yrs!

The Cherry Blossom may be known as a plant to all the millennial born children. For people who can remember the the roaring 50’s, 60’s ti die shirts, the disco era and so on Cherry Blossom is more associated with a delectable candy treat. The Walter M. Lowney Company of Canada began operation in the 1890s and was responsible for the production of Cherry Blossoms. Eventually it was bought by the Hershey Company and is still manufactured in Canada to this day.  These days its produced in Smith Falls, north-east of Kingston.

Cherry Blossoms are iconic for their bright yellow square box, that contains a maraschino cherry, and cherry syrup. However a product produced by Hershey NEEDS that chocolate touch! That’s why every cherry is surrounded by that high quality Hershey’s chocolate, mixed with coconut and roasted peanut pieces. Is your mouth salivating yet?

The coolest part to the production of Cherry Blossoms is that the cherry syrup starts as a solid when produced, but thanks to an added enzyme, breaks down and becomes a liquid over the course of 2 weeks. Now that’s a sweeeeeet application of science!

Come check out the Cherry Blossoms and so many other cool candy products at your Canada Day Party!
